All-French Showdown : POPOV Comes Out on Top Against MERKLE
The two players know each other well, having faced off numerous times in both international competitions and the Top 12. Over the past two years, however, Christo has enjoyed a series of impressive achievements that have propelled him into the world's top three, while Arnaud's progress has been hampered by several injuries.
The match got off to a slow start, with both players avoiding unnecessary risks. The rallies were short before they gradually adjusted to the conditions. Christo, already familiar with the venue after playing doubles alongside his brother the previous day, showed slightly more aggression and capitalized on Arnaud's errors to take an 11–9 lead into the interval. However, Arnaud quickly found his rhythm, closing the gap before taking the lead himself (14–12). From that point on, the rallies grew longer, with both players needing to remain patient and avoid rushing their shots to gain the upper hand.
After winning the opening set, Christo took control of the match and began to dominate the rallies. Arnaud MERKLE committed several errors at the net, being forced to play more aggressively. This allowed Christo to build a comfortable lead. The younger POPOV brother went into the interval ahead 11–4 and never looked back, closing out the second set convincingly, 21–7, to secure a straight-sets victory.
Arnaud MERKLE: “Unfortunately, this is a level of intensity I'm not used to yet. I haven't played for six months, so it takes time to get back to my best level. The reality of the gap between training and competition—with the stress and the desire to perform well—is complicated. And then I started right off against one of the best players in the world, so obviously it wasn't easy. I started off pretty well; I even had the lead at one point in the first set, but I couldn't keep it. I made some silly mistakes—it's my fault. I'll have to learn and take lessons from all of this. I need to learn and bounce back.”
Christo POPOV: “It's really unfortunate that two French players had to face off in the first round. I would have preferred that we play at the same time on two different courts so the crowd could cheer both of us on. […] Now it's time to rest because the first set was physically demanding. We really gave it our all. And tomorrow I have singles and doubles matches, so now I need plenty of rest to try to be in the best shape possible because it's going to be a big challenge. This is a tournament where I really want to perform well. First, because it's in France, so it's very close to my heart. And second, obviously, the fact that I made it to the final last year gives me a boost to try to at least match those performances. We had an amazing week last year, so I want to relive that!”
Christo returns to the court tomorrow to face a familiar opponent, Denmark’s Rasmus GEMKE (No. 24), for a place in the quarterfinals.
