Round 2 - WD : Surprises !

The women’s doubles matches today brought some good surprises and unexpected players to the next round !

The danish pair in good shape

The last women’s doubles pair from Denmark Thygesen/Fruergaard was facing today the japanese Yonemoto/Tanaka (6th seed). In the first set, the Japanese achieved an impressive comeback from 20-16 to 20-19. But it was not enough and the pair Thygesen/Fruergaard won the first set 21-19, helped by the French crowd. They explained : « We had a bad start but we came through with variations in the offensive part of the game and we played long rallies. » Finally, the danish pair won the match with a final score of 21-19 21-19.

The world n°1 out !

An other unexpected performance came from the defeat of the world number one Fukushima/Hirota against Chang/Jung. Indeed, they curtly lost the first game 12-21. They came back and won the second set 21-17 but not without difficulties since the Koreans were leading 17-15 until the last minute. The third set turned in favor of Chang/Jung who won 21-17. The Korean pair ranked number 21 in the world is going to compete against an other Japanese pair (Matsumoto/Nagahara) in the quarter finals.

Stoeva / Stoeva control the game

To end with a more predictable match, the Bulgarian pair Stoeva/Stoeva won in only 2 sets 21-17 21-17. The sisters explained : « We are really happy of our performance and always delighted to play here in France. The crowd is amazing and supports us, we are going to give our best on all our next matches. » Tomorrow they will have to face Matsutomo/Takahashi who won their match at the end of the night.
